Took me a while to find the problem, but after taking out all the icons it saved just fine. After I set it to a valid folder, everything worked as they should. This just started happening. This enabled me to save a document in Word 2010 format. I guessed it has to do something with the big size of the document. (If I copy a part of it into a new document, ~20 pages, it saves without problems). I have always saved documents that I use on a recurring basis in my Microsoft Word program. The time now is 08:11 AM.
Your formatting and other document elements should be preserved, but the "round trip" through RTF ends up clearing out any corruption that may have occurred. The equations were no longer images and I successfully edited and saved the document. It was the software that seemed to find the virus I had on my machine. Sometimes when I've run out of solutions, I use a product called ccleaner.
Repairing the thumb drive (using windows tool) fixed the problem and allowed me to save as a word file. Word 2013 Won't Save The users that have this same problem are roaming profiles.
